Paphos

Paphos (2006) is a video art work, exploring the margins of an Australian archaeological dig in Paphos, Cyprus. The town is renowned for its ancient ruins - tombs, mosaics, catacombs and mythological landmarks. Aphrodite is said to have been born at a rocky beach outcrop just to the south. Apart from its historical interest, Paphos is a popular resort town – especially for British tourists. It is full of restaurants serving Yorkshire pudding and nightclubs showing live Champions League soccer. While the archaeologists focused on the careful excavation of the ancient Greek theatre on Fabrica hill, my interest was in exploring intermediary spaces between the mythological, the archeological and the contemporary. There is the odd iconic scene but the focus is on peripheral instants - small, often apparently static moments in which multiple layers of time coexist.
